Who are Teen Life in HDb?
We’ve talked a lot about Teen Life In HDb and what they’re goals are, but who are they?
They are the student-led youth advisory arm of Healthier Delray Beach that time and again has proved itself a group of passionate, motivated students who truly care about the youth of Delray Beach – and not just their classmates. The pilot event for Teen Life in HDb was to show just that, a sort of introduction to their peers: This is who we are and what we care about.
The Pilot Event
After months of planning and meetings, the students agreed to kickoff Teen Life in HDb with an event centered at Atlantic High School (AHS). I think what can be so daunting about starting anything, whether that be a school club or a whole initiative like HDB is where to start? It’s easy to get caught up in all the great ideas and that itch to see the difference you’re working towards materialize almost magically after conception, but to get to that you need to find an opening. For HDB that meant focusing on children and families in the 33444 and 33445 zip codes, for Teen Life in HDb that meant starting at Atlantic High School.
The students decided that an event during the three lunch periods at AHS would attract the most students. What better way to break up the monotony than with music, dancing, and giant Jenga with a secret mental health twist.
So, with that, the students prepared
They plastered their school with flyers, planned give-aways, promotional items, created a logo, enlisted student photographers and videographers, and picked music. On top of the work they were doing for this event, they also created a PowerPoint presentation that describes their plans for next year and their goals as an organization.
As summer break has come upon students throughout Delray Beach, Teen Life in HDb will move towards its planning stage. The students have agreed to meet periodically during the summer to plan for next year and work towards their goal of engaging all the youth of Delray Beach.
The energy from Teen Life in HDb is infectious, it’s only a matter of time before all of Delray Beach catches the bug.
